    Of all the medical conditions that exist, arthritis is the one that is most often treated with alternative types of therapies. That is because it is a chronic condition for which there is no cure yet. In addition, people with arthritis are in pain and therefore need relief. And, quite frankly, there is mistrust and fear when it comes to conventional treatments, particularly pharmaceuticals.

    There are certain items that should be looked for in any type of alternative or complementary therapy. (The terms “alternative” and “complementary” can be used interchangeably. An alternative therapy, when used in combination with conventional therapies is referred to as a complementary therapy.) Therapies that fall under this label are acupuncture, herbs, vitamins, massage, music therapy, etc.

    First of all, look for the “warning signs”. These are tip-offs that the treatment being touted may be bogus.

    1. If the seller of the product accuses the medical community of a conspiracy, watch out! This is a favorite tactic of unscrupulous vendors.

    2. If solid evidence is lacking. Testimonials alone should not be relied upon because it is easy to fake them.

    3. If a remedy is touted as being effective for a wide range of medical problems, be very wary. Nothing works for every disease.

    4. A treatment referred to as a “miracle cure” or “new discovery” or “discovery suppressed by the medical establishment” should be viewed with skepticism.

    5. Jargon words such as “detoxify” or “purify” or “oxidize” should also raise red flags. These words sound impressive but unless there is scientific proof, it is probably a lot of hocus-pocus.

    Check to see if the treatment is supported by well-designed clinical trials. With arthritis, the placebo response (response to a sugar pill) can be as high as 40 per cent! Therefore, it is critical to see if the treatment has been tested extensively against placebo.

    If an alternative health provider is soliciting your business, make sure you look into their qualifications and credentials. National organizations should offer a means of checking to see if the person you’re planning to see is certified. A note of caution… just because a provider lists an impressive sounding organization doesn’t mean it is a valid one. Beware of this and look into their reputation. You can also check your state government listings for agencies that regulate and license health care providers. These agencies may list practitioners in your area and offer a way to check credentials.

    Many arthritis sufferers take herbal remedies as well as vitamins and minerals. These nutritional supplements don’t have to undergo the same rigorous testing and labeling process as over-the-counter and prescription medications. Some of these substances, including products claimed as “natural,” have drug-like effects that can be potentially dangerous. Some supplements can cause problems during surgery such as changes in heart rate or blood pressure or increased bleeding. Others may have significant interactions with prescription drugs. Make sure you let your physician know about any nutritional supplements you are taking.

    Many people with arthritis use the Internet for their medical information. While the ‘net is a great place to get good information, it is also a prime source of misinformation. Because alternative practitioners are charismatic and often offer hope where mainstream medicine cannot. They use the placebo effect to great advantage and capitalize on the fact that many diseases are self-limiting and resolve by themselves. But when contemplating a course of treatment, it is prudent to reflect upon the words of Victor Herbert, renowned hematologist and champion of evidence-based medicine: “for every complex problem there is a simple solution, and it is always wrong.”

    Tips for Prevention of Staph Infections in Schools

    Over the past few years some dangerous Staph bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics. Only recently has the news media focused on this serious new health problem, which is of urgent concern to our schools. These killer bacteria, called methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus or “MRSA”, have recently caused panic in schools in the USA. Some infected students have become seriously ill and some have died after these antibiotic resistant bacteria invaded their blood stream. Most Staph bacteria only causes minor skin infections and are treated with antibiotics. Serious and deadly infections however, develop when antibiotic resistant bacteria (MRSA) is involved. The best methods for prevention of all types of Stap infections involve general cleaning strategies which can be incorporated into the routine cleaning practices at all schools. Here are some tips for limiting the possibility of Staph bacteria infecting your students:



    1.) Establish a daily and routine environmental cleaning schedule for your school restrooms and dining areas. The cleaning staff should be trained and monitored to be sure they understand and practice thorough and effective cleaning procedures. Your local health department can provide advice on procedures.

    2.)Use germicidal products or a solution of 1 part chlorine bleach and 9 part water to clean any surface that is subject to frequent touching by students, including light switches, doorknobs, faucet handles, hand rails and all restroom fixtures. Use soap and water at a minimum, preferably an all-purpose cleaner, for a daily cleaning of all other floors and surfaces.

    3.) Install automatic soap dispensers, automatic hand dryers and automatic paper towel dispensers. These touch-free automatic dispensers will reduce student’s exposure to appliances that are frequently the source of hand transmitted bacteria. like Staph. If your school still utilizes the old manual hands-on dispensers it will be nearly impossible to clean them frequently enough to eliminate the spread of bacteria.

    4.) Immediately clean up any surface that has a visible body fluid contamination such as blood, urine or other body fluid.

    5.) Make sure automatic soap dispensers and automatic paper towel dispensers are filled with product at all times. This should be part of the cleaning personnel daily routine. Refill the dispensers daily.

    6.) Encourage good hygiene. Students should be cautioned against sharing water bottles and personal items, encourages to shower after gym classes and other physical activities.

    7.) Require that students cover cuts, abrasions and lesions with a proper dressing (bandage) until healed. Athletics staff should monitor this closely among their athletes.

    8.) Clean all items used in athletic activities with an all-purpose cleaner and wash uniforms after each use.

    9.) Publish, articulate and post reminders to staff and employees the importance of frequent hand washing with soap and water or the use of germicidal hand gels. Your schools restrooms and cafeteria should have warning signs posted in highly visible areas reminding everyone that hand washing is a requirement of your facility and is everyone’s responsibility.

    Following these simple cleaning routines will greatly reduce you schools risk of bacterial infections of all types, including Staph and viruses, such as the flu, and the common cold.

    Herbs are edible plants…plants that have been tried and tested for their value throughout the history of humanity.

    By trial and error, humans uncovered the secrets of herbs by eating them and discovering which plants were beneficial and which were not. Before humans stopped hunting and gathering food, herbal plants were eaten along with any meat kill. It was in this manner, humans learned that certain plants, added to a meal, made it taste good and that certain plants would cure sickness. Thus, plants became an important part of human existence and have continued so as humans progressed emotionally and intellectually, evolving into today’s’ modern culture. Plants play a role in most all cultures around the world; perhaps with the exception of those people who inhabit the extreme frozen north lands of the world.



    Probably, herbs were first used as a food and food flavoring. Some of the oldest herbs and most popular are:

    Parsley, which is used more as a garnish than any other herb. In this capacity it ranks about equal with watercress and lettuce, probably less used than sage, but more than any of the other herbs. It is mainly used in dressings with mild meats such as chicken, turkey, venison, veal, with baked fish; and for soups, stews, and sauces, more so with those used with boiled meats, fish and fricassees of the meats mentioned. It has a broader use than any other of the culinary herbs.

    Sage, which is a sharply tasting plant, is used primarily with such meats as pork, goose, duck, and other kinds of wild game. Big amounts of sage are mixed with sausage meat and, sometimes, with various kinds of cheese. Throughout America sage most likely, the most used of all herbs, outranking any two of the others, with except for parsley.

    Thyme and savory are equal in use, and are basically used like parsley, though both are used in various kinds of sausage. Marjoram, which is similarly used, is next, and then comes balm, fennel, and basil. These herbs are not as strong as the former and are often mixed to produce new flavors.

    In a special category by themselves are tarragon and spearmint, the former is primarily used as a decoction in the seasoning of fish sauces, and the latter as the world-wide dressing with spring lamb. Mint has also a more convivial use, but this subject could take up an entire book.

    Dill is an important herb whose seeds, rather than their leaves, are used in flavoring food other than candies and pastries. Dill plays its primary role in the pickling barrels. Immense quantities of cucumber pickles flavored principally with dill are used around the world. The demand for these pickles is met by the leading pickle manufacturers who prepare special brands, generally according to old, secret recipes, and sell them to the delicatessen and the grocery stores.

    As history progressed with humans eating a huge variety of herbs, their secrets were revealed. How many people suffered and even lost their lives by eating poisonous plants is unknown, but the number would probably be frightening. Without the sacrifice of our ancestors, we would not have the benefit of those incredible herbs capable of treating all kinds of human diseases. A few of the herbs used to treat human disease are:

    For hundreds of years, various cultures around the world have eaten the bark of the willow plant. The bark, of course, cured headaches, fever and, later, when chemically processed by the large pharmaceutical companies and named “aspirin”…the bark of the willow was found to prevent heart attacks and strokes. It was quickly manufactured into a tablet and can be purchased across the counter in many stores.

    Burdock(Arctium Lappa) is usually known as a common, bothersome weed that grows across the United States in road ditches and wild fields and has burrs which will stick tight to a person’s clothing or skin. Long ago, this “weed” was found to have healing actions such as cathartic, diuretic, and diaphoretic and was used to treat blood diseases, rheumatism, gout, venereal diseases and kidney problems. But it has been forgotten and has relapsed into the hidden world of “secret herbs”.

    Cinnamon(Cinnamomum) is usually used as a flavoring in food preparations. Actually, Cinnamon is one of the “duel” uses herb: it can be used both in food preparation and as a treatment for illness. This “secret herb” has stimulant actions, stomachic, carminative, astringent and aromatic, and can be used to treat bowel problems, and upset stomachs. When used as a medicinal herb, cinnamon is stimulating and gives a warming feeling which makes it an excellent stomach tonic. Anyone having bowel problems can get relief. The dose is one third of a teaspoon of powdered cinnamon stirred into water.

    Hollyhock(Althaea Rosea) is a well known flower found in gardens all over the world. When the flowers are dried and made into a tea by putting the powdered petals into hot water, hollyhock tea is good for leucorrhea. It is also used for inflammations of the mucous membranes such the lining of the stomach, bowels, throat and urinary passages.

    These are just a few of the many herbs that benefit people allover the world and have done so for thousands of years.
